Here's how you know you've made it in the music business: You've stayed strong for three decades on your own terms, on your own time, by your own rules, and over that time your influence has only grown. Each of your albums has been stronger than your last. You've been brought onstage by Bruce Springsteen, because he wanted to play one of your songs. You've seen high times and low ones, good days and tragic days, but every night you give 100%, and every morning you wake up still swinging. This is...
When it came time to record their seventh studio album, the eclectic, beautiful Whatever's On Your Mind, the members of Gomez found themselves in a bit of a “long distance writing relationship.” Spread out on opposite corners of the world, the band – who had once shared a house – were forced to think outside the box and revamp their writing strategy. Not the types to shy away from a challenge, they took up an unusual, near-futuristic tactic. Instead of getting toget...
This three piece takes the best vibes of the lakeshore, chills them out and grinds them up into what Summer sounds like. It’s beaches, beer and weed; it’s a Long Beach-meets-Midwest sound. Skee-Town Stylee has been bringing their liquid reggae-dub grooves to the lakeshore since 2009, drawing crowds both young and old to a fresh take on a classic sound....

Com Truise is one of the many personas of producer and designer Seth Haley, born and raised in upstate New York and operating out of a 12’-overrun apartment in Princeton, New Jersey. An admitted synth obsessive, Com Truise is the maker of an experimental and bottom heavy style he calls “mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk”....
On September 13th, 2011, San Francisco’s Girls released their second album Father, Son, Holy Ghost. Two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club) it is the natural, third entry in Girls’ recorded trinity, and features their most accomplished recordings to date.Album was a sketch of the life Christopher Owens and Chet “JR” White lived in San Francisco; a messy bedroom broadcast to the world. Broken Dreams Club blasted their home-studio ideas into widescreen projection and served as a crucial stepping stone to newfound st...
So yeah, it's been five years since the last Broken Social Scene album, but it also hasn't. In the time that's elapsed since the release of 2005's self-titled opus, we were more than tided over by the 2007 release of founding member Kevin Drew's solo album, Spirit If..., followed a few months later by co-founder Brendan Canning's own solo set, Something for All of Us - both of which were released under the "Broken Social Scene Presents" banner, both of which were supported by tours that featured career- spanning setlists, and both of which featured pretty much the same group of players you hear on this new BSS release, Forgiveness Rock Record. In hindsight, Broken Social Scene's period of supposed inactivity wa...
Curt Kirkwood – Vox/Guitars Cris Kirkwood – Bass/Vox Shandon Sahm - Drums It doesn't take long after listening to the Meat Puppets' thirteenth studio album overall, Lollipop, to realize that they have boiled the essence of what the group is all about right down to its core. As a result, singer/guitarist Curt Kirkwood, bassist Cris Kirkwood, and drummer Shandon Sahm have an instant Meat Puppets classic on their hands, and an album that fits in perfectly with such mid '80s classics as Up on the Sun and the underrated Mirage (while not coming off as an attempt to recreate a certain musical era of the group). Interestingly however, the Meat Puppets did not achieve this by working out the songs' a...
The 3rd EP by San Francisco's The Actors is called "High and Low." It was released on September 9, 2010. It's got 5 songs and runs about 20 minutes. All of these electro-rock songs were played by hand (i.e. no programming, drum machines or Ableton). These are, without a doubt, the best and most heartfelt songs we've ever written. We're incredibly proud of all of them, and can't wait for people to hear this music. The Actors - "High and Low ...
PEPPER, comprised of guitarist/vocalist Kaleo Wassman, bassist/vocalist Bret Bollinger and drummer Yesod Williams, formed in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1997. Having grown up surfing on the island, it's not a wonder that they would mix their rock "shock and ah" flare, along with their mellow island rhythm roots to create their own truly diverse sound. They have also been known to hypnotize fans of all walks of life with their incredibly sweet harmonies all the while keeping bodies moving on the dance floor. The trio played mostly house parties and garages before finally shipping out to San Diego, CA in 1999 to push their first studio release Give'n It.In 2001, they entered the Volcom wareh...
Joel Zimmerman doesn’t like being called a DJ. The dance music phenomenon from Toronto, better known as deadmau5, rolls his eyes at the description which he sees as a hopelessly outdated way of describing what he does. His sets are closer to live performances as he assembles tracks on the fly using cutting edge computer technology including software that he’s helped to write himself. “There are no CDs involved,” he explains. “It’s a technological orgy up there and I try and keep it more my music than anyone else’s. If people come out to see deadmau5 I want them to hear deadmau5 music.”Now firmly established as one of the most innovative and popular electronic live acts globally, De...
Up from the warm, almost oppressively humid Texas air rises a din. The sound is created by only three people. For now, we’ll just call them D.H., Nikki and Slim. The music that the Dallas trio are creating might be the aural equivalent of walking down a farm-to-market road on a foggy morning just before day breaks. The clamor began in November 2007 when these three humans came together to form True Widow. As is to be expected, they set about committing this alchemy to tape and from this arose their self-titled debut in November 2008. True Widow was recorded by the more-than-capable hands of Matt Pence at his Echo Lab studio. But then came time to spread the good word. ...
You could try to describe the sound of the five eclectic musical backgrounds melding together to become what is Make Your Exit with fancy words and hyperbole... but the overbearing fact of their music is that it's simply honest. And honest music isn't always easy to come by. It's stripped down, yet amped up, it's noisy and abrasive, yet quiet and modest. It's the sounds of five extremely talented twenty-somethings just letting it all out. Lucky for us, their post-rock release lands somewhere between familiar and completely unfamiliar. Four part vocal harmonies akin to Fleet Foxes, with the addition of jazzy saxophone parts, and just the right tasteful amount of Canadiana twang - Make Your Exit is unlike anything you've h...
LA OTRACINA is the New Wave of Psychedelic Heavy Metal, a contemporary musical vision exploding with classic influences and mind-warping sonic fusions! Their sound is a dense and majestic universe where the epic glory of 70's proto-metal and hard-rock dance with the graceful complexity of cosmic progressive rock and the hallucinogenic mystery of heavy psychedelia, and all the while free-form improvisational interludes give way to poly-rhythmic thrash assaults and spiraling jazz-rock freakouts!Formed in Brooklyn, NY in 2003 by drummer/vocalist Adam Kriney and guitarist Joshua Anzano (now of TITAN and CHILDREN), LA OTRACINA was always hell-bent on creating highly visionary music that collided sonic ideas from the ou...
Los Angeles-based musician Kristian Hoffman may be best known for writing pop hits including "Total Eclipse" for 80's mutant disco legend Klaus Nomi but his illustrious career has included many highlights. Kristian was the main songwriter for the highly regarded CBGBs era pop/punk band Mumps, which included vocalist Lance Loud, notorious gay son from the PBS award winning show An American Family. Additionally, he has served as musical director for Rufus Wainwright as well as Ann Magnuson and he co-wrote and produced Ann's last album Pretty Songs and Ugly Stories. Hoffman has appeared on records by the Kinks' Dave Davies, El Vez, Lydia Lunch, Congo Norvell, Gary Valentine, and James White and the Blacks. On...
Once two musical scallywags Jager-bombing their way around the East Village in spray-on jeans and worn out sneakers, The Glass have refined their lifestyle and sound to sexy results with their debut album At Swim Two Birds, out November 16 on Plant Music. The Glass are Dominique Keegan and Glen 'DJ Wool' Brady. Dom runs the Plant Music label in NYC with partner Adrian "Stretch Armstrong" Bartos, and Glen lives in Berlin, where he runs the label We Collect Enemies and releases music under his DJ Wool moniker. From the first swirling drone of feedback to its fairytale-like ending, Between Whales And Feverish Lights is an intense, exquisitely constructed soundscape that rests in beautiful chaos. Teetering on a precipice of apocalyptic nightmare and candy-coated delight, I AM SONIC RAIN succinctly captures the pathos of a dreamlike state. The band twinkles and thunders unpredictably through moments of sonic brilliance, instrumental violence and serene ecstasy, delivering songs that are emotionally resonant even without words. This dichotomous clash of tone - alternating, constructing and deconstructing both melody and mood with varying levels of hope and despair - results in the heaven and hell of post-rock albums. Bursting with...
Emma Hill is a 22 year old singer songwriter living in Portland Oregon. Emma began crafting her personal flavour of folk in Sleetmute, the small Alaskan village she grew up in. After moving to Palmer for High School, Emma quickly became a staple of the budding Alaskan music scene, bringing her rurally influenced stylings to Anchorage. Emma sang with the group Blackbird Productions and as half of the folk duo Pennies and Patches - garnering a large local recognition. In 2006 Pennies and Patches went on hiatus, and Emma found herself in Portland, Oregon and began writing more personal solo material. In 2007 Emma recorded and released her first full length album Just Me on Kuskokwim records. Just Me showcased her wide vocal...
The Black Rabbits formed on a hot winters night in Orlando by brothers Jetson & Skyler Black. Little did they know at the time that what they were creating would take on the essence of that warm winter night. "Our music is a bit of an oxymoron," says lead vocalist Jetson. "It's loud yet soft, edgy yet pure, it has retro elements and modern ones, it's both serious and playful at the same time." Consisting of the two brothers along with bassist Yuki Tong and organist Kim Drake the group accompanies a mix of classic and alternative indie rock elements with influences such as The Who, The Pixies, The White Stripes, and The Doors. In early 2010, still virtually unknown, the band released their first debut...
Blue October have risen through the ranks to become a platinum selling rock band with a body of work that includes modern rock hits like “Hate Me” and “Dirt Room” and the #1 VH-1 smash, “Into The Ocean.” The band’s sixth album will be released in the summer of 2011 when they will take their heart on the sleeve live show from Austin City Limits to the world....
A year after breaking out into the scene, Miss May I have returned with their sophomore effort "Monument". Delving deeper into the source of anguish that fueled "Apologies Are For the Weak" (selling well over 25,000 records in 1 year), Miss May I present an even more eclectic side to the organized chaos they have earned a reputation for. Borrowing from a wider range of genres, the new album touches upon parts of thrash merged with melody and metalcore goodness. The intensity on Monument...
Few hard rock bands are as widely respected yet criminally overlooked as King's X. The trio (bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick, guitarist/vocalist Ty Tabor, and drummer/vocalist Jerry Gaskill) seemed destined for the big time with their irresistible blend of melodic Beatlesque harmonies, metallic riffing, and prog rock detours, yet for reasons unknown, never truly broke through to a mainstream audience. Pinnick (b. Sep...
