Featured biographies and interviews from today's indie artists

Beulah's Miles Kurosky and Bill Swan first started off as officemates, working the mail room at a security firm in their native San Francisco in 1994. While having a small dislike for one another, Kurosky and Swan did share a fondness for music. They two put their animosity aside in 1996 and spent the next year and a half mastering a lo-fi, indie rock style and recording songs. This resulted in the release of the A Small Cattle Drive in a Snow Storm 7" in 1997. Anne Mellinger joined the group in time to record the Handsome Western States EP for the celebrated Elephant 6 label that same year. By 1998, Beulah's rotating roster comprised Kurosky, Swan, Steve LaFolette, Pat Noel, Steve St. Cin, Bill Evans, and Ana Pitchon. Tours with ...

The self-described "fuzz-folk" project Neutral Milk Hotel was one of the primary outgrowths of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, a coterie of like-minded lo-fi indie groups -- including the Apples in Stereo, the Olivia Tremor Control, and Secret Square -- who shared musicians, ideas, and sensibilities. While ranging in sound and concept from solo acoustic work to full-band performances, Neutral Milk Hotel essentially remained the work of Jeff Mangum, a singer/songwriter from the remote town of Ruston, Louisiana. Ruston was also home to Robert Schneider (later of the Apples), as well as William Cullen Hart and Bill Doss (who formed the Olivia Tremor Control); throughout high school, the aspiring musicians -- all inf...

Beginning as a raw country/rock trio called Cactus Bob; Robby Gira (singer/ songwriter/acoustic guitar), Ryan Fox (drums) and Trevor Mulvey (bass) of what would become Trouble in the Wind, got their start playing at the "E Street Café" in Encinitas, CA four years ago throughout the summer. Since then Trouble in the Wind has developed and matured greatly, expanding their range and musical craft. Although the group still carries the Americana/country influences, their sound can span across a broad range of diverse genres. With the addition of Kyle D. Merritt (guitar/accordion /banjo/melodic), T.i.t.W. blossomed into a multi-instrumental collective able to spin larger than life, rich cinematic tales....

Annalise Emerick is a gypsy, a poet of the people. Her music is an intimate snapshot of society. Annalise rolled into Boston with an acoustic guitar and a cache of catchy melodies Fall 2011. She hadn’t lived in town a week before she was playing coffee houses and indie haunts from Cambridge to Brookline. As a leading folk voice of her generation, Annalise bid goodbye to music city, Nashville, ...

Memphis Crawl was founded in July 2004 by lead vocalist and songwriter Matty O'Brien. Since their inception, they have been regarded as one of the best live acts around and have knocked audiences dead from NY to LA!! Memphis Crawl has shared the stage with Leon Russel, Silvertide and many more. Lead guitarist Bryan Stevens mixes Richards loose sense of rhythm with Hendrix's face melting solos. Bassist Mad Freik moves like no other and lays down the funkiest bass lines ever! Drummer Mike Vincenti pounds the drums like a possessed John Bonham and Mitch Mitchell. Memphis Crawl is a sight to be seen and a sound to be reckoned with!...

Another project founded by Jack White, Dead Weather began after the Raconteurs toured the U.S. with the Kills in summer 2008. Toward the end of the tour, bronchitis made it difficult for White to sing as much as usual, so Kills singer Alison Mosshart was drafted to sing several of his songs. Mosshart's on-stage chemistry with the Raconteurs led to White, Mosshart, bassist "Little Jack" Lawrence, and White's house guest, Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, recording a cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" The newly formed band began working on a full album at White's Third Man Studios in Nashville TN, with White on drums for the first time since his stint in Goober & the Peas....

Sky Ferreira (born July 8, 1992), is an American singer-songwriter, model and actress from Los Angeles, California, United States. In July 2009 she signed a record deal with EMI. Ferreira got her start in her hometown of Los Angeles. She sang gospel songs in church throughout her childhood. At age 13, she started taking opera lessons to refine her singing voice. She spent the next few years maintaining a MySpace profile where she uploaded various tracks. Shortly before her 15th birthday, she caught the attention of Swedish producers Bloodshy & Avant by sending them a message through the social networking site. The producers were impressed and subsequently decided to work with her. ...

Sal Piamonte may hail from the same hometown as Alanis Morissette and his vibe may capture some of his homegirl’s rebellious fire, but “Take Me Home”—the blistering first single from the Ottawa born singer/songwriter’ latest album Lives in Devil City—puts the listener square in the heart of Alabama and Louisiana, where soul-driven Southern rock reigns. Since his early forays into the music...

Chords of Truth is a solo acoustic project by recording artist Jason Garriotte. Jason is originally from a small town in Indiana and didn't start playing guitar until college spending over ten years developing his style before performing live. His musical influences include artists like Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash. He plays acoustic guitar using basic chords, strumming patterns and fingerpicking styles with lyrics that stretch the imagination. His goal is to create music that helps change the way people look at the world around them and to see things in a new light. All while enjoying the ride. ...

Once upon a time there was a band called Seven Shades of Grey. They played all over the Boston area at venues such as The Middle East, TT the Bear’s, The Precinct, and Hard Rock Cafe. After a mini tour this past summer, the band went on hiatus. In the aftermath of these events a new band was formed: Christie Prince. Various musicians move in and out of the band, depending on their mood and what the moon is doing that day, but the usual line-up includes Willie Aronson on bass, Daryl Romkey on drums, and Christie Prince singing and playing guitar/keys. The intentions for this band are pretty simple. Raw energy. Passion. Grit. And rock....

Jane's Addiction, the band who lit the fuse that started the rock n' roll revolution of the 90s is back - just when they're needed most. "STRAYS," the first all-new Jane's Addiction collection in more than a decade, is set for release in mid-2003, and it stands as perhaps the band's most extraordinary expression to date. Rocket-fuelled, as ever, by Perry Farrell's flamboyant lyricism and guitarist Dave Navarro's flash virtuosity, and driven by the muscular and ingenious engine room of drummer Stephen Perkins and new kung fu bassist Chris Chaney, "STRAYS" is Jane's Addiction at the peak of their artistic potency. "It's a logical progression from where we left off," Navarro says. "but a...

Rage Against the Machine earned acclaim from disenfranchised fans (and not insignificant derision from critics) for their bombastic, fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering leftist rants against corporate America, cultural imperialism, and government oppression into a Molotov cocktail of punk, hip-hop, and thrash. Rage formed in Los Angeles in the early '90s out of the wreckage of a number of local groups: vocalist Zack de la Rocha (the son of Chicano political artist Beto) emerged from the bands Headstance, Farside, and Inside Out; guitarist Tom Morello (the nephew of Jomo Kenyatta, the first Kenyan president) originated in Lock Up; and drummer Brad Wilk played with future Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. Rounded out by bassist...

Gary Brown (Guitar/Vocals) is a DC area native (Palmer Park) with 30+ years playing experience.  After picking up his first guitar (an old Guild acoustic) at age 14, Brown quickly progressed to electric and after stints with various local bands, most notably The Spoilers, and sitting in around DC area clubs he decided to take the plunge and form his own group in 1992. Gary Brown loves playing guitar, and loves playing/performing for people - the more the better.  Festivals are a great way for him to share his love of guitar and music with a wide spectrum of music lovers.  It's easy to see, from watching him perform, how connected he is to the music - he emotes - making sure each note counts, conveying not only ...

Anaal Nathrakh was created for one purpose - to be the soundtrack for armageddon, the audial essence of evil, hatred and violence, the true spirit of necro taken to its musical extremes. Since being founded in 1998, the band has gained a reputation for embodying precisely these things, with a history including not only the release of four albums and an EP to rapturous acclaim, but collaborations wit...

Martrel “Fat Trel” Reeves was a child far more ambitious and cognizant of his surroundings than the norm. At age seven, he professed ambitions to be a rapper, while peers delivered the proverbial “I have a Dream” Speech about aspirations to be nurses, doctors, lawyers, and fire fighters. As peers sat excited by the endless possibilities of the future, Fat Trel sat perplexed by the harsh realities of DC; the placed he called home. Fat Trel exited high school at age 15, caught up in the lure and necessity of street life; a road more traveled when the have-nots impose an immediate call to action. Unconvinced high school education would support his family or cultivate his ambitions, Fat Trel hit the ground running in pur...

In 2001, around the time that his first child was born, Thom Yorke took the habit of spending the early evenings driving alone around the fields and by-ways surrounding his home just as dusk was drawing in. "I've got one of these cars with the natty blue headlights and the colours of the headlights got mixed in with the wild-life running into the bushes. The twilight invoked a dream-state within me. It's incredibly beautiful where we live but I used to listen to this Penderecki tune that's really ominous and scary and I'd just get this perverse sense of foreboding." These solitary drives helped inspire the ideas that bolster up much of what would eventually become Radiohead's 6th album. "I wrote a lot of ...

Until Nine Inch Nails crossed over to the mainstream, Ministry did more than any other band to popularize industrial dance music, injecting large doses of punky, over-the-top aggression and roaring heavy metal guitar riffs that helped their music find favor with metal and alternative audiences outside of industrial's cult fan base. That's not to say Ministry had a commercial or generally accessible sound: they were unremittingly intense, abrasive, pounding, and repetitive, and not always guitar-oriented (samples, synthesizers, and tape effects were a primary focus just as often as guitars and distorted vocals). However, both live and in the studio, they achieved a huge, crushing sound that put most of their contemporaries in aggre...

RIGOR MORTIS formed in 1983 in Arlington, Texas and immediately became a driving force in the original wave of North Texas Metal. With the emphasis on speed and the subject matter steeped in horror and gore, RIGOR stood out as extreme intimidators, on and off stage. Starting out as a 3 piece composed of Mike Scaccia on guitar, Harden Harrison on drums, and Casey Orr on bass, the band added vocalist Bruce Corbitt in '86 and quickly signed to Capitol Records, releasing their classic self titled debut record in '87. Two years later, Corbitt left the band and Doyle Bright came in on vocals. RIGOR went on to release two more records; "Freaks", on Metal Blade Records and "RIGOR MORTIS Vs. T...

The band from Osnabrück around charismatic frontman Matthik offers a multi-dark-colored mix between slightly gothic-heavy, mid-tempo songs, truly monumental stunners and heart-wrenching ballads. Musically balanced and technologically on the highest level this debut promises a great future for the five musicians. With numerous airplays at renowned radio stations like NSR2, NewcomerRadio Deutschland, RockLiveRadio and 40 additional airplays in 3 months, the young musicians from the North of Germany are being supported by the label „Danse Macabre" and NewcomerRadio Deutschland since 2009. Guest appearances in e.g. the special radio broadcast for „Unheilig" at NewcomerRadio were up on the newcomers&...

Before "Asleep in the Bread Aisle" dropped on 4/20, there wasn't much to base an opinion on besides a catchy party song and the first white boy rendition of a Gangsta Grillz tape, "The Greenhouse Effect" hosted by DJ Don Cannon himself. I was living in Atlanta for a year under the support of Scooter Braun, Steve Rifkind and a couple of best friends. Ditching school prematurely and &q...

Jenny Owen Youngs, singer/songwriter and natural history enthusiast, grew up in the woods of New Jersey and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. After self-releasing her first album Batten the Hatches in 2005, Youngs signed with Nettwerk Records, and went on to release two albums and three EPs through the Canadian indie label. She has toured extensively through the US, UK, and mainland Europe, both ...

If you read a lot about new music on the Web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding sentence indicates how bewildering and draining the chatter about M.I.A. became. Arular, M.I.A.'s first album, leaked well before its official release, allowing journalists and downloaders plenty of time to dissect it and bat ideas back and forth -- taking in the sounds, words, and absolutely all of the context -- before average music fans were able to develop their own opinions.Maya ...

Music history is rich with rock bands fronted by dynamic duos. Looking to carry on this yin and yang tradition are singer Emily Armstrong and female guitarist Siouxsie Medley, who front Los Angeles’ Dead Sara — an electrifying four-piece rock band whose supercharged music is propelled by Medley’s exhilarating, monster guitar riffs and Armstrong’s powerful, wailing vocals. Dead Sara also includes bassist Chris Null and drummer Sean Friday, who funnel the ferocious spectacle of the band’s high-energy live performance into their self-titled debut album. The debut will be released on the band’s own label, Pocket Kid Records through Fontana Universal. Produced by Noah Shain, the de...

These EPs will be sold separately in sequence every quarter over the next 15 months, each as they are completed. They will not be distributed to stores. As the cycle concludes, the fifth and final 12" will come packaged in a beautiful,...

A distinct murmur went around the world in 1994 when a certain six-string guitarist from New Jersey named Michael Romeo of the prog band Gemini recorded The Dark Chapter demo and sent it out to record labels. It seemed the new guitar messiah of the coming 21st Century had made himself known to the world and he’d soon launch a new band that would stir up the prog genre. With an innovative mixture of heavy metal, progressive rock and neo-classical sounds, Romeo and his men in SYMPHONY X recorded a debut album (released in Japan in ’94; released worldwide in 1995) that began their journey to create a blueprint for the young generation of prog metal bands to follow. The Damnation Game (1995) celebrated the debut o...
