Hefner is a band that I have grown to appreciate over the years. I had just gotten used to their quirky folk-rock stylings and then they had to go and change on me. Before longtime fans run off screaming, let me explain what Hefner has done on their Dead Media CD. The album starts off with the title track, which begins with the most computerized music that I have ever heard. The group then comes in with vocals and then more elements to bring it all together. One the second track they start out with an annoying sample of a kid saying “Aye but when the group kicks in with a Big Audio Dynamite sort of song that gets your head bobbing. Hefner take it down a notch for “Junk, which they try a Mercury Rev sound with fill instrumentation. They really have fallen for an electronic sound that compliments their already fine songwriting. Hefner proves that a band can reinvent themselves and move along quite nicely. It’s now up to the fans whether or not they will follow. Their new sound sits well with this fan that has finally come around to their way of thinking.
