This duo comes to us from Vienna, Austria where the infamous Kruder & Dormeister also call home. Freaks and Icons was originally released on their own Couch Records label in Europe but demand for the album was so strong that they had to seek out better production an d distribution. D & K provide us with some really cool down-tempo beats that inject eastern influences throughout. They possess a jazz quality to them like I have never heard. The track "Homebase" sticks out as a favorite with it's seemingly forever loops and beats that go on for a pleasurable 7+ minutes. Samples run rampant on the album from Istanbul and other middle eastern areas. Another outstanding potential single is "Smile" which features Slavic Sanja with her sultry sexy vocals like a cross between Macy Gray and Bjork. This album is a must for anyone interested in downtempo bands.
