Barenaked Ladies, Tempest

Adolfo Lazo is the drummer for Celtic rock band Tempest. Lazo is Cuban born and bred and eventually ended up in the Bay Area in California. He has always had the ambition to go out on his own and On Tape is his first foray into the solo territory. He seems to want to get everything out with this album too. We get some Spanish tracks but mostly English ones. The album starts out Spanish with "Rey De Espana", one of the best tracks of the 13 songs. 

Some songs begin to show potential like the goofy names "Rice Rockets". I would like to hear this one with a different singer. But then it's back down hill on "Outta Vegas". Then where is he going on "Get Your Get"? It's sounds a little electronic but very organic just the same. It's instrumental other than Adolfo repeating the title over and over and over. But at least he has "Frijoles and Tortillas".

In his bio Lazo states that he "reached a certain age and thought, it's time, it's now or never. I want to show that I'm more than just the guy behind the drums." So in the end, just because you can go out on your own doesn't mean you should. There are other avenues for releasing your creative freedom. It's hard to tell if Adolfo would be a good songwriter for other artists because listening to On Tape just doesn't feel good. It feels forced. Songs like "365" are better off not being on tape. On Tape does feature some decent production though.
