Batidos (a Latin Milkshake) is the new group from DJ and Producer Ron Trent and Groove Collective’s Jay Rodriguez and it’s like nothing you have ever heard before. What Ron and Jay are trying to do here (as with most of Six Degrees releases) is break down musical and racial barriers to come up with a mix of music that defies categorization. They have succeeded on all fronts. Batidos concentrates quite a bit on the Latin American grooves but there is so much more here in this amalgam. It is super jazzy and the beats demand you to shake your booty. The musicianship on the album, both Jay and Ron as well as the cast of others that join them here (Chucho Valdes contributes to two tracks). Some of the tracks are very tribal in nature like “Cumbe with its killer percussion work. Others are very festive in nature like “Tengo Sed with its Cuban flavors all over it. Smooth jazz is explored in the beautiful “Dear Neven. There are plenty more musical boundaries that Ron and Jay can break down so expect a follow-up to Olajope.
