There has been quite a bit of talk about Malian singer/songwriter Issa Bagayogo and let me be the first to tell you that it is justified with one listen of this creative worldbeat album. Timbuktu features Issa and his traditional 6-string lute but he is well versed on the world of dance music as well. When beats from a track like “Saye Mogo Bana get you moving you will be begging for more. Unlike some other attempts to fuse traditional African beats with Western influences, Timbuktu just sounds right. It sounds as if Mali has been in possession of drum machines and samplers for eons. The way things go on Six Degrees, Timbuktu will probably get the remix treatment but is not needed. Take “Gnele, which already has plently of remix feeling to it, could become an instant dance classic without any help. Get on board with Issa Bagayogo (his name is just fun to say) and take a trip into another world.
