Is it live, or is it a sample? That is the question that Paul D. Miller (aka. DJ Spooky) presents us with Optometry, an amazing journey into Jazz and electronica. He is joined by other Thirsty Ear companions like Matthew Shipp (piano), William Parker (bass), Joe McPhee (tenor sax, trumpet), and Guillermo E. Brown (drums) to create a very interesting music fest. At times, you know the music is live and in the studio while others, you have a sneaky suspicion that DJ Spooky is just playing with you. Paul adds that he played bass, kalimba, various software, and turntables to add to the final mix, what you hear on CD. His ultimate goal was to make a soundtrack to be able to drift away with. And I feel that he has succeeded in his goal. Optometry is a very interesting listen, never getting annoying or too intense. Enjoy in the evening with light out and having no distractions for ultimate enjoyment. Billy Martin from Medeski, Martin and Wood and Priest of Antipop Consortium both make appearances.
