I forget how I first heard of Earth, but I used to work a lot of record fairs during my A-Levels. One of the perks of working with a record dealer (besides getting paid in records and CDs) is getting to take a break and trawl the stalls at fair all around the country. With the Internet now being the dominant force, record fairs arent what they used to be.
Anyway, I picked up Earth 2 for a couple of quid out of curiosity. Released in 1993 on Sub Pop, the lineup features Dylan Carlson, whos more famous for obtaining for Kurt Cobain the gun with which he shot himself (lets not have that debate here, please) on guitar and Dave Harwell on bass. A CD: 3 tracks spanning 65 minutes. 3 tracks and 65 minutes of bass-heavy sludgy trudge and drone. Im not selling it here, I know, but believe me, its terrific and makes for great ambient music without being ambient in the conventional sense.
About halfway through the 15-minute opener, they do break into some proper riffage, albeit in some kind of stoner metal style. Strangely, despite being ultra-slow and ultra-heavy, its a very pleasant sonic experience.
