Pavement, Yo La Tengo, The Velvet Underground

I am a bit late on Takka Takka and their second album Migration but as I always say, good music always deserves to be heard. I missed out on Takka Takka debut album despite the glorious acceptance the media gave it. Migration is their sophomore album and it is indeed no slump. The band's sound is pretty laid back. It shares some commonalities with bands like Yo La Tengo and Velvet Underground along with a smidgen of mellower Sonic Youth for flavor. Now the Sonic Youth comparison is not due to the typical wall of sound, it's more for the layered soundscapes that these guys do so well. There are a lot of ambient moments that hardly even maintain a beat, but when the guys decide that beats are necessary then the beauty ensues. Listen to "Homebreaker". It starts out very minimalistic but then melds into Hot Chip territory by the time you get to the end of it, breathtaking. A lot of Takka Takka's songs rely very heavily on the beats. The rhythm is almost assumed in their songs making Migration ever more cerebral. On moments like "Lion In The Waves" and a few others you can't help but draw comparisons to Brian Eno's more pop oriented work. 

Overall, Migration is an album that must be heard. It's one of those gems that may take a few listens to fully appreciate but it will be time well spent.
