If Neil Halstead’s songwriting wasn’t proven in his Slowdive and Mojave 3 bands then Sleeping On Roads is sure to bring around the uninitiated. Slowdive started Neil on his way to becoming a defined songwriter. After releasing a couple albums with Slowdive, Neil decided to move on and start a band that was a little more focused on songwriting. This is when Halstead started Mojave 3. The next logical step from there is to do a solo album to allow more personal feelings enter the songwriting process. Sleeping on Roads is most definitely a personal album as well as a finely crafted singer / songwriter one. If you have heard Mojave 3’s latest album Excuses for Travellers you will be a bit accustomed to Neil’s mindframe right now. Sleeping on Roads contains songs that aren’t quite Mojave 3 material. They’re not quite as rootsy as Mojave’s almost Americana feel. The result here is a very gorgeous recording and possibly Halstead’s finest moment. The album is mellow but it is very textured in the style that Neil is used too with both of his previous bands. It’s beautiful to be able to watch a talent such as Neil Halstead blossom into what he is today.
