If his musical project’s name, topped with a vibrant exclamation mark, isn’t telling you enough, then NeverShoutNever!’s Yippee EP should tell you quite clearly that his songs are drenched in sweet optimism. The 17-year-old musician Christofer Drew is really “in your face” with this 4-track EP, which is solely fueled by youthful energy that is bursting at the seams. As for complexity, Drew allows it to shine for rare moments. While, “heregoesnothin” introduces us to your average fast-paced emo-pop jingle, the highlight of this EP probably lies within “bigcitydreams,” where the lyricism and acoustic quality is reminiscent of big names such as The Format and All Time Low.
Because Drew makes it so enjoyable to bop to his blips and beats, I’m almost sorry to say that his latest work of art is actually pretty obvious and predictable in terms of musicianship. It is catchy enough, however, and for a first project released by an adolescent star, it should hold the attention of the appropriate crowd. With a little more push, NeverShoutNever! should be able to soar above with its emo-pop counterparts. After all, it seems as if the only way stand out from such a worn-out genre is just to make it sound great. With all his youth and jubilance, Christofer should be able to get NeverShoutNever! to that point.
