Guerrilla Funk Monster is a band that takes funk/rock and experiments with it to the point of taking it to a new level. Triptophonic is a double album, quite ambitious for the bands debut. While funk is abundant on Triptophonic there are some tracks that probably are a bit too experimental for the average listener. Tracks like the second disc’s “Savages with it’s spooky sounds and way-out-there sounds could have been dropped off of the disc. Ultimately what should have happened is Guerrilla Funk Monster should have been a little more selective in their track selection and formed one strong disc. Even the most experienced band will have trouble filling up to full discs of quality material. With that said, there are some very decent tracks on the album and the band proves itself to be a very apt and original act. They take influences like Funkadelic, Tom Waits, and Mr. Bungle to come up with some tracks that are very cool and different. If you are looking for something out in left field, give Guerrilla Funk Monster a try. Apparently their live show is a sight to see too.
