Hot off of her cool Tori Amos-like Girl Versions album, in which she covered many male artists songs (Girl Versions was nominated for a Juno in 2002). She has recovered nicely from her fall from grace (or major label dropping her) and proving herself not only as a great Canadian singer/songwriter but entrepreneur as well, as president of her own Dead Daisy records. Asianblue is the latest for Gryner and the songs are better than ever. It’s almost as if recording all those male songs gave her new inspiration. While her voice reminds me of Tori Amos or a stronger Aimee Mann, her songwriting is catchier than both put together. The pop sounds that she comes up with are very original in a time of loads of copying. In addition to producing some of the tracks herself, Emm chose Wally Gagel (Folk Implosion, Eels, Rolling Stones) for a few tracks as well as Daniel Burns and Mike Rowe. This adds for a nice variation of production. The drum track of “Young Rebel is a great example of what these production variances. Emm Gryner may just get another Juno nomination for this fine pop album.
