With the release of 2000’s Sophtware Slump, Modesto, CA Grandaddy became media darlings and gained tons of new fans. Concrete Dunes is an expansion on 1999’s b-side and rarities collection entitled Broken Down Comforter Collection, adding some more recent out-takes and rarities to it. I would go so far as to say if you own Broken Down then Concrete Dunes is redundant. The album fares pretty well considering the span of time that it covers and the different qualities of recording. There are some pretty great tracks on here inlcuding “Levitz� and “12-PAK-599�, which are done in true Grandaddy fashion; moody and psychedelic but very accessible. There is no doubt that Grandaddy takes much influence from Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips and yet are different enough to remain relevant. If Sophtware Slump was your first introduction (as it was mine) then Concrete Dunes will take you on yet another Grandaddy journey.
