Before settling on the name "Joy Division" the band named themselves Warsaw (after Bowie's Warsawza) and this was intended to be their debut album on RCA Records way back in 1978.
However, the band were upset by the post production work that RCA did to their tracks and asked to be dropped from the label (having already been in touch with Tony Wilson at Factory)
Having heard their subsequent Joy Division releases it's easy to think that the band may well have been looking for a cleaner, more elctronic and angular sound than the RCA production guys managed here.
But nonetheless, with plenty of time between now and then under the bridge its possible to listen to this for what it was.... A brilliant punk/postpunk masterpiece!
All of the tracks reappeared on the following Factory Records albums with Martin Hannet's familiar and awesome polished production values all over them
But this album sounds more personal, amateur and rough than the Factory releases. and that's why i love it so much!!
Still sounds good and relevant today. And still influences far and wide
