Gang of Four got their start back in 1977 in Leeds, England. They disbanded in 1984 and in their brief pop history they managed to influence many up and coming bands and still do to this day. This two-CD, 40-song compilation is a great introduction to newcomers and a fantastic retrospective for long time fans. Rhino has managed to put together a great collection complete with a 52-page booklet looking back on the life of the band written by British punk historian Jon Savage. The music includes rare singles, demos and a few live tracks never really seeing the light of day. The band was punk at heart but they had a much more mature feel to them. At times the band was very political and at others they were just having a great time. Bassist Dave Allen left in 1982 to start another band you may be familiar with, Shreikback. They tried a couple reunions in the 1990's but they never amounted to much. A few of these tracks somehow made this collection. A smart band with a deservedly great Rhino reworking. A must for any rock collector.

Dennis' cry for fans sparked my interst, as did seeing Bloc Party, Radio 4, !!!, and Joy Division in the list of "Similar Artists." I highly recommend any fans of these bands to check Gang of Four out. Take a taste at their MySpace page, you'll know right away whether you're a fan or not. As for me, I'm a fan! Thanks Dennis!
