One would think it would be hard to follow up an album such as the well-received The Moonstation House Band. David Vandervelde has more or less recreated himself as more of a roots musician on his sophomore album, Waiting For The Sunrise. It's a different mix that he utilizes, one that borrows from The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, or even the light rock fare of Loggins & Messina. Seriously!
There are times when I'm wondering if this is the same David Vandervelde. Not to worry though. I still found a lot to enjoy on this album. David manages to pull of a great album proving his songwriting skills are not a one-trick pony. You may be turned of if you liked the more rocky side of this songwriter. But give it a shot. It takes back to the days of dad rock or yacht rock, whatever you may like to call it. Tracks like "Old Turns" really sound like Jayhawks out-takes. He picks things up slightly with "Someone Like You", utilizing the Rhodes quite nicely. It's one of my favorites of the set
Ex-Wilco member Jay Bennett takes co-writing credit on "California Breezes".
Give a once over. You'll know from there if you'll like Waiting for the Sunrise. And if you don't, I'm sure David won't care. He seems pretty carefree on this one.
