When Vast Days came to me and asked for a review I didn't have the faintest idea on what they would sound like. The band name makes me think of a metal band but what I got was more of an atmospheric ethereal album bordering on New Age. Don't run away yet, this stuff isn't half bad. Metatonic is the name of the album and it is a good word for the way this music makes you feel.

"Return.Physical" is the opening song and it starts out ever so gently only to build up to a wonderful climax. Then on "Elsewhere" we are given something that sounds like a darker Delerium. They have elements that harken the heyday of Dead Can Dance, the operatic female vocals that are present on "Elsewhere" and many other tracks as well. Some of the songs are very ambient with hardly a beat and others are very rhythmic with the beat driving the song to conclusion. One of these ambient songs is "Nian", seemingly too brief at only 2:25, the shortest track on Metatonic. I kind of preferred the darker side of the group like on "Poures". It just felt like something bad was going to happen, evil lurking.

The production on Metatonic is very professional. Everything just works. The way the vocals ebb in and out and strings weave their way around all of the other instrumentation. Vast Days is bound for good things. This is only just the start.
