The Please Be Seated EP from The Ryan Express caught me off guard. Definitely one of those great projects that you don't see coming because you are completely unaware of what to expect. It starts out with an unassuming acoustic guitar riff just before Ryan brings in the vocals on "To Be Happy", a nice relaxing minimal effort. But after going through the whole 7 song EP I realized that this is pretty much all I'm going to get. On a song like "Business Matters" Ryan gets pretty excited but he doesn't have the arrangement to back up his angst. I love the intro to "Lighten Up", it reminds me of Bob Mould's guitar on some of his solo stuff. This was my favorite track on Please Be Seated. Things just get all goofy on "Beansandcornbread". Think old school grunge like Tad done acoustically.

The Ryan Express needs more but Please Be Seated shows that Ryan is on the right track with his home recording experiments. I'll be very interested to hear any of his projects when he gets more into the arrangements. It does show promise.

Before listening to this CD I had pretty much given up on the whole unplugged thing. I felt it was just sorta lame and overdone, lack the punch & swaggar that rock is known for. However, I totally did a 180 on this CD.Each track stands out & stand on its own yet still flows together nicely. The songwriter draws you into his thoughts and word. It isn't always light or pretty but its always beautiful. You feel the pain on the sadder tracks, the anger on the harsher ones, and enjoy the whole ride. This CD isnt just about navel gazing & emotions , it is a comprehensive spiritual journey of discovery, awe and wonder. The vocals are varied and interesting, appropriate to each song. The same with the innovate chord progressions on each song. This is the CD many early Alt. rockers wish they could have made. Cobain isn't the only one whos smiling.
Its rare to hear a male vocal & guitar sound so moving and without an ounce of cliche. yet this CD is more polished than one would expect. Its an excellent production with careful thought going into the sound quality of the CD. I encourage you to check it out.
