My oh my, why has it taken this long for Mr. de la Rocha to come out with something after the destruction of Rage Against The Machine. Maybe he was just waiting for the right person to collaborate with. And it appears that he found it in Jon Theodore, form drummer with The Mars Volta. This five song EP from the band named after the quote "It's better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb" is quite impressive but not quite as hard hitting as you might have expected. But from the sounds of it that it's on purpose. Zach and Jon wanted a more stripped down rock album. That's more or less what you get from the duo. Check out the almost pure hip hop track, "If You Fear Dying" for a great example of the nakedness of what the band can do. The thing I like about Zach's vocals on here is that he sings a little more than you may expect. He's got a decent singing voice as well. But really, we all love Zach for his political rapping and that's exactly what most of these songs deliver. The title track could be construed as the best track of the 5. But you could argue any of them the best.
For those disappointed in what Audioslave delivered, you should be happy and content with these 5 songs. I hope we see more from One Day As A Lion. These are some great tracks and should prove to lay the ground for the new.

I just tracked this album down a few days ago and I loved it. Great minimalist rap from de la Rocha; hopefully there'll be a follow-up full album soon.

Every track on this E.P I feel is quite strong. Zack does however get a bit annoying with the brashness of his delivery.
I HYPED One day As A Lion on EverHYPE and scored it 87%, which I think is very accurate.

If you get on there rate me a 5 on it and request friendship.

Another stellar review. I agree with the singing voice point. It's awesome that he's trying different things, but, sadly, everyone is looking for that hardcore poli-rock rap we've all fallen in love with. The simplicity of this EP really allows Jon Theodore to stand out rather than being buried behind the thousands of sounds the Mars Volta produces.
All in all a great 5 song taste of hopefully things to come

Wild International is sitting well on me, I'll have to get this EP. Hearing Rocha now, like I'm sure it does for many, has me longing for RATM. Even the keyboards on WI sound inspired by Tom Morello's playing. I think I need to spend some time with Evil Empire.
