Ufomammut are a psychedelic sludge band from Italy, and have been kicking out impressively dark, riff heavy glory for almost ten years. Essentially a trio lead by the one-named guitar beast Poia, on Idolum then bring in a couple of guest vocalists, notably Rose Kemp. But vocals are an after-thought here. The real meat is in the riffage. Drummer Vita and bassist Urlo are relentless in providing a cement solid bottom to the chaos.
Consider the opener, "Stigma," heavy with a capital "HEAVY." "Stardog" follows on its heels with just a little more distortion. "Ammonia" and "Nero" add in some prog touches and tribal drumming, but still, the band is rooted to an evil greasy and glorious Blue Cheer/Sabbath Vol. IV feel that is here updated and tweaked to lethal effect. "Destroyer" is a tune that defines this genre, and can stand with anything by Earth or Sunn O))). While the set ends on a weird note, with a long ambient section to "Void," "Idolum" is a bomb of a record, a power sludge feast that grabs you by the balls from chord one and hammers you into dirty bliss the rest of the way. Ufommamut may have a silly name, but who cares ; they deliver some crunchy, crusty, brutal pleasures here.
