I don't know what it is about Brant Bjork but every album that I hear from this man is pure genius. Now, I'll be the first to admit he doesn't have the best singing voice but that's not what I fall for. What I enjoy is the deep grooves that he gets into. Yes, he was a founding member of the influential Kyuss and he played in Fu Manchu but it seems that some of his best material has been reserved for these amazing solo albums.

Punk Rock Guilt nicely moves him from Somera Sol in which he had a band called The Bros and moves him into a proper solo position, performing all instrumentation on the spot and arranging 90% of the songs while in the studio. This album is a little different in the sense that Brant choose to go 100% analog (seems wrong that I am listening to it on CD then). Get ready to hear some of the coolest rock grooves this year. Punk Rock Guilt starts out with "Lion One" which starts out unassuming but builds into a monstrosity. When the full riffs kick in you can't help but start the air guitar going. It's the sort of song you want opening up an album because you keep cranking up the volume as loud as you can, setting the stage for the rest of the songs. Just when you think it can't get any better Bjork throws out the funky "Dr. Special" and really gets you moving. The title track is up next and it brings you the vibe of what you've come to expect from Brant. No bullshit rock-n-roll. That's what it's all about.

20 years from now when people look up stoner rock there will be a smiling picture of Brant Bjork.

There is no better way to start the summer than with yet another Brant Bjork record. The record is called 'Punk Rock Guilt,' yet has nothing to do with punk, and there should be no feelings of guilt while blasting this record from your Trans Am at a stop light. PRG is stoner rock at its greatest, delivering pulsating and distorted bass grooves, box riffing on the guitar, and a very open drum sound. Brants vocals use the music for solid footing as he sing-talks his way through these eight infectious grooves. Brant does a particularly good job with Dr. Special and Born to Rock, two songs that support the claim that he is the Bob Marley of rock music.

From an outsiders perspective, (you know, someone who isnt a diehard fan), it might be easy to say that Brant hasnt delivered anything new on this outing. Indeed, hes recycled some of his riffs, but thats no reason not to give this record a try. When Brant recycles a riff, he gives the riff a whole new body. Hell slow a riff down some, make it sludgier, add that extra rhythm click, or completely hide it under a mush of effects. These new arrangements keep his music fresh and are in keeping with his roots. Brant loves his dusty SoCal rock n roll jams just as much as his fans do, and there are no signs of him slowing down.

Is this a perfect record? Probably not, but it sure hits the spot on a sunny day.
