The "Greatest Hits" schtick for a band's debut album is old. About as old as the secret bonus track. That alone got me off to a bad start for the review of The Go-Sheilas debut album Greatest Hits Vol. 1. But with that bitterness in tow I found myself falling quickly for this bands wonderful pop/punk hybrid. The band doesn't bring anything new to the formula but the required elements are there: skill, harmonies, hooks and big dose of fun. After going through the album once there wasn't a song that remained in my head even though all of the songs were catchy. Either I wasn't paying attention or the hooks didn't have the right bait on them. Second time around I found a bit more meat to sink my teeth into.

They keep throwing out a Green Day comparison. I hear nothing of the sort. A better comparison would be the Donnas. They've got the same sort of fun factor as well as talent. "Belinda Carlisle fronting Green Day". Sure, Sheila has great voice like Belinda but please limit your comparisons to those that are valid. Another gimmick they utilize is doing one of those stereotypical covers. The one they opt for on Greatest Hits is Nena's "99 Red Balloons". Good fit but it's been done way too many times.

Just think of some fun, female fronted, easy going punk music and the Go Sheilas should fill the void. Nothing new but fun nonetheless.
