Filter - The Amalgamut
Filter is a really hard nut to crack. It’s hard to figure out where Richard Patrick is going with some of his songs. With a career starting out with a powerful single like “Hey Man, Nice Shot and then stardom hitting with a mellow track like “Take My Picture, it’s really hard to gauge where the former Nine Inch Nailer is going to go. Truth be told, he kind of sticks to both styles with The Amalgamut. You get the heavy “Nice Shots and the mellow, almost sell-outs like “Take My Picture that are polished and ready for radio. The album starts off fairly intense with “You Walk Away and keeps it up through “American Cliché and actually all the way to the radio ready “The Missing which really doesn’t sound all that different than his other radio tracks. The next track, “The Only Way Is The Wrong Way moves a little faster than “The Missing but it still has the sheen. While I could slag Richard Patrick and his Filter for being two-faced, I must admit that most of the radio tracks are better than a lot of the stuff you hear on the radio today. And the heavy songs are damn heavy. I would like to meet someone who buys The Amalgamut for one of the mellow songs they hear on the radio and then take it home and listen to a track like “You Walk Away. Either disappointment or bliss would ensue.
