I haven't paid much attention to The New Year but this release made it onto my desk and I'm glad it did. Introductions over, I found myself hitting repeat on this album a few times. The opening track, "Folios", was a great indication of what was to come on the rest of the set. It was quite some time before the vocals washed over you but by that time you would have been happy had the song been a hypnotic lullaby. On the second song, "The Company I Get", I was thrown. I felt like I was listening to Nada Surf or even Death Cab For Cutie. Not what I was expecting from these former Bedhead brothers. More surprises like this lurked around the corner as well. The songs are all a lot more upbeat than most that Bedhead had released. The slower ones like "Seven Days and Seven Nights" have enough melodic guitars to keep you wrapped around every note.
So let this release go down as one that I wasn't expecting to like near as much as I did. I like it when such a new sound comes out of a band that has such a stigma attached to it. Sure, there are the quiet moments on The New Year like the piano driven "MMV" but for the most part, look for guitar driven tracks that quite powerful but not overwhelming. Check them out if you like any of the bands I've listed above or if you like any lighter indie pop. The New Year have a great refined sound already, only three albums in.
