I love indie pop music. Its that sort of magical sound that can transform a mediocre sound into pop bliss. The Uglysuit is a new band from Oklahoma City that aims to do just that, create pop bliss and they succeed on most accounts with their eponymous debut album. Their lead off "Single", "Chicago" is a little misleading of the rest of the album's sound. It is very mainstream and pop-ish. Not saying that The Uglysuit doesn't have pop tendencies but they aren't as direct as this song. That aside "Chicago" is an amazing song just begging to be used in the next teen drama. It puts the band in the Shins style of pop but with the rest of the album, slightly darker, they deserve to be in the Rogue Wave class instead. A little more artsy, a little more robust. Not that there is anything wrong with the Shins, it is just deceiving of their sound.
"Brad's House" is just as charming but it does have a darker side to it. It ends off with a big finish too.
On the song "...And We Became Sunshine" they start out all light and airy but then they come in pretty strong with the full band. It's the longest track on the album clocking in at 7:20 but manages to escape the boredom when a pop song goes over the 4 minute mark.
The Uglysuit is an album that will grow on you if given the chance. It's an easy album to dismiss after one quick listen but as you dissect it more elements come in to play. This band really is charming and its no wonder Touch and Go scooped them up.
