A lot of work needs to be done before the band Park Ranger can really be recognized for its talent. From what I saw out of the album Safe Without Sound, Park Ranger has great lyrics, but I really had to fight to stay awake in order to even notice this facet.
With the opening track, I am immediately alerted to the hypnotic quality of these acoustic melodies. Vocalist Sean Hansen has a very gentle, soothing voice. However, the best talents behind acoustic masterpieces are noticeably able to bring a different mood to a song depending on its vibe, yet Hansen seems static in his vocal abilities. There is quite an oddity in the faster-paced song "Expectancy Would Be Shorter," which managed to lightly shake me out of my slumber halfway into the lulling nature of this album. Nevertheless, with this great opportunity to show some variety in the album's "black sheep," Hansen fails to flaunt any vocal ranges; I am immediately in a slight state of torpor once more.
Overall, the lyrics are exceptional and tell very endearing stories of love lost and gained, but all of this is overshadowed by the weaknesses in musicianship. Safe Without Sound is definitely not a completely boring album, but it does lack the charisma that can make the softest of acoustic melodies quite unforgettable.
