Originally back in 2005 Retribution Gospel Choir was a collaboration between Low's Alan Sparhawk and Red House Painter/Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek. Both artists were used to playing hushed rock music and didn't get a chance to rock out that much. This was their chance. Time came to hit the studio and Kozelek was no longer an official member although he took on production of this self-titled debut and releasing on his Caldo Verde label.
You'd find more in common with Neil Young on this album than anything Alan has previously done with Low. Although Low fans would relish in the minimalistic rock sound that Retribution Gospel Choir partakes in. Sure, it's louder but it has a lot of the same principles. I also likened this album to some of Superdrag's output. Alan could have lifted "What She Turned Into" right off of Last Call For Vitriol. It's got the same power pop feel to it with a bit of a rougher guitar sound. But it's little minimalistic guitar solos that really set this album apart. See the incredible track "Kids" for incomparable example.
New Low member Matt Livingston plays bass here and Eric Pollard takes on the drums to round out the line-up. Retribution Gospel Choir is one of this years surprises for me and I think the more I listen to this album, the more I will fall in love with it.

I've been spinning this album periodically ever since you first sent me the Rec, Dennis, and it's grown on me bit by bit. There's a definite contrast between the dirtied, distorted guitar sounds and the minimalistic songwriting. Sometimes it actually sounds too conflicting to work, but certain songs have a charm about them. Love the flurishes on "Somebody's Someone", and "Kids"...definitely my favorite track.
