I always have a stack of CDs sitting on my desk and often times good CDs go unheard. So from time to time I will randomly pick something in that stack. This time around I was fortunate enough to grab the debut album from New England's Human Flight Committee called Oh, When The Animals Unionize. This album desperately needs new artwork. The cover was almost bad enough to warrant dismissing.
The band seems to borrow a lot from The Receiving End Of Sirens but I found The Human Flight Committee to be slightly more adventuresome in their delivery. The album's proper beginning, "She's A Car Destroyer" kicks off with a furious pace but right away you can tell that melody is very important to this new band. This is also the first single for the young band. They break it down a bit on "You'll Get It When You're Older" but not so much as to lose the listener. This one reminds me slightly of Samiam. A phaser style keyboard brings you in to "Tint and Quarantine" until the blast away with an At The Drive-in intensity. "Russion? We're Barely Moving" incorporates one of those annoying vocoders but it seems to be alright. Then the emo titled "The Shortest Distance Between Two Points is a Punch In The Mouth" takes the band to the next level with some nice time-shifts happening.
Best thing about The Human Flight Committee is they aren't afraid to mess around with the standard. Take the final track, "Oh, The End" where it is a bit of an electro experiment. It is something that other bands could have failed at but THFC manages to make it add to their sound.
Definitely look out for this album. It's one of those albums that many people won't take the time for but if you do, you will be rewarded.
