I have to say right off the bat that Souljacker is not the Eels finest album. Don’t run away quite yet. An Eels album is worthy of a listen in any case. When the album opens up with “Dog Faced Boy you are presented with a fine example of pop songwriting. If you are unfamiliar with e’s style of songwriting it may take you a second or two to appreciate it but rest-assured you will be craving more once you delve deeper into his twisted reality. He is a man that was wrought with great emotional pain earlier on in his career but he seems to have recovered from it as of the last album. When you get to the second track you can completely abandon all sensical ideas that you previously had and can start bopping along. Souljacker carries on with some more superb songwriting but as I stated, this album is not the Eels finest moment (if you are looking for it try their previous effort or their debut “Beautiful Freak). The quirky but fun track “Woman Driving, Man Sleeping seems like a throwaway at first but after a couple of listens you find yourself humming the song yourself. E uses his wide array of instruments and samples along the way to keep things interesting. As always with Eels albums, it’s over way too soon. Beck fans apply here.
