Even without E's vocals on Electro-Shock blues, you still have a fine pop album. Banjo, strings, horns, organs, and samples make up the rest. The vocals add a sheer honesty to the album. The emotions found on here are deep bordering on manic depression. Even with the heavy content, the album's catchy rhythms and singable choruses ensures that boredom nver sets in. Mark Everett must be going through a world most of us could never imagine, but some songs have indication of recovery. The Eels manage to write catchy pop without letting the dark subject matter interfer.
