Power poppers Admiral Twin return here with their fifth LP The Center of the Universe, a heavily sixties influenced record that reminds the listener of a more trippy version of Utopia Parkway era Fountains of Wayne, but with a purer, older rock and roll sound that discards the doses of pop-punk that many bands of their genre adopt. The music itself has a lopsided, sunny quality that combines with disenchanted yet optimistic lyrics, resulting in a mental picture that sort of looks like those movie versions of Dr. Seuss (if you’re inclined toward an optimist’s mentality) or the Southern California fantasy land depicted by Bret Easton Ellis (if you’re a cynical jerk).
One thing that drags The Center of the Universe down are lulls in certain songs. The album drags in some places, with hooks that just aren’t catchy enough, or chord progressions that simply fail to spark an interest. However, tracks like the opener “Good as Gold,” in addition to “Get Well Soon” and “You Hung the Moon” reveal the band’s true ability, allowing the listener to overlook weaknesses in other places. The lesser songs might not be great, but the better ones are absolutely wonderful. It’s stuff like this that established their reputation, and Admiral Twin do not disappoint.
