Dredg is an interesting band. I don’t really know what I was expecting but I was not expecting what I heard. It was as if they were being marketed as a metal band but they are everything but. El Cielo is a very dramatic album that soars like Radiohead with a little more theatrics. There are little, if any, metal similarities with Dredg. The album starts out with a strong track called “Same Lo’ Road that has the great voice of Gavin Hayes bringing us into the thick of things. It almost sounds as if he could break out into a scream like some metal bands do but instead the rest of the band builds around his very apt singing voice. On a couple tracks Hayes is joined by Indian chants to make things tribal. Sometimes it works and others it doesn’t. El Cielo is an album that people will either fully engage or completely hate. There might be an identity crisis here with the band. They should be marketed as intelligent rock music with beautiful vocals. For the most part, El Cielo is a gentle album and it never roughens you up. I think the odd push would have helped the album stand out a bit more. It’s still a very engaging and unique album though.
