Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood: Original Music By Jonny Greenwood
It's very rare that I review a soundtrack; often times it takes a review of an entire film to accurately describe a soundtrack's effectiveness. However, with Jonny Greenwood's (Radiohead) stirring, haunting and emotionally exhausting work for the awesome, awesome, awesome film There Will Be Blood, I felt an exception should be made.
Throughout the film itself, Greenwood's strings and samples mold an already engaging experience into a more frightful and unavoidable one; his music drives the silent moments of the picture, building tension or letting it lie dormant for brief periods, carefully digging holes of want in the viewer and letting time fill them back up. It's very hard to explain without having seen the film, so that would be the best first step. Without that context, I fear these songs might be lost on some; without the powerful scenes to connect them with, you might find the soundtrack to be good, but nothing great. Alongside such a great film, however, yoiu have all the ingredients for a perfect soundtrack. You'll want to own it after seeing the movie, I'm willing to wager. So do yourselves a favor and see it already. For once, all the awards were well deserved.
