It's so strange to listen to Celtic Frost's debut Morbid Tales right next to their latest effort Monotheist. The strangeness comes from this band's roots in punk/thrash/death metal rather than the black metal they've come to dominate. People associate Celtic Frost with that black metal sound they've worked at for so many years that I don't think their roots and solid influence in the thrash or even early hardcore should be forgotten. Morbid Tales is a solid album that forges a metal path none had seen, something more death metal-ish. And seriously, who would have thought this to come from Switzerland? Apparently Venom was a big influence on the kids that put together Celtic Frost and that influence is readily apparent.
The album opens up with the very hardcore track "Into The Crypt of Rays". The next, "Visions Of Mortality" solidifies this sound, starting into the growling but still maintaining a somewhat singing voice. One song that kind of hinted at where they would head is "Return to the Eve" and maybe "Visions of Mortality", both possessing a bit of a slower, even darker sound but honestly, these guys are now a completely different band with an unconventional music career.
If you listen to this album now you can hear where bands like Blag Flag, Gorilla Biscuits and Suicidal Tendencies took their influence from.

Celtic Frost...their early work belongs amonst the metal classics of all time, their influence is felt everywhere and is at the same time down-played. Them and Venom pretty much started Black Metal, along with Hellhammer, Bathory, and all those greats from a time gone by.
