Elyzabeth Diaga had been studying dance and theatre in Montreal and she started writing her own music, finding it very rewarding. Her versatility with singing in three languages gave her even more international singing opportunities. She returned to Montreal in 1999 and met up with Ben Roberge who was also well versed in the musical arts and was a multi-instrumentalist. Diaga is the result of their mixed influences and abilities. It is an album that really doesn’t focus on one genre too much, instead mixing genres up to come up with this fresh sound. It could be considered trip-hop except there is a little too much energy. It could be considered pop but there is too many dark overtones to it. The music is all organic and provided mostly by Ben. Elyzabeth’s vocals are the highlight on Diaga though. She has an ability to soar to beatiful levels due to her theatre background. Diaga is a great album for female vocalist lovers as well as mellow ambient music.
