Often when it comes to British bands, I feel like I'm on my own with ones that I like. The Kooks seemed to have had a mixed reaction since their inception and upon their release of their debut Inside In/Inside Out. Konk is their sophomore album and you know what? I like it even more than their debut. It just seems like a full effort and even more thought out than their previous effort. The album kicks off with "See The Sun", a magnificent display of their infectious pop. If this one doesn't sell you on The Kooks then you may as well shut off your iPod. This album goes down easy without require much investment. It's an album that has all the hooks in the right places, rocks out when rocking is required.

Arguments against the Kooks are that they don't have any originality. I would argue who does these days. It's not about being original. It's about being good at what you do and being able to write some great songs. Konk is one of my favorite albums this year and I'm not ashamed. If you like unabashed British Pop music then this album should be on your list.

So while you are sitting around for a new Franz Ferdinand album, stop by and check out The Kooks latest ("Do You Wanna" should feed your hunger). You may find many treats in this album, or you may take the masses opinion and trash it.

It's tough navigating the high seas of popular music these days. So much GENEROCK (pronounced Jen-Air-Rock, not to be confused with the rock from Gene Simmons; it is however in the urbandictionary.com) fills the airwaves with a that "generock" voice that sounds like the latest winner of American Idol, whatever his name is, Daughtry or Cook (I hope I didn't spoil this review by even mentioning their names).

In any case, when one hears the thick but charming accent of lead singer Luke Pritchard coming through their speakers in songs like "Shine On," that person is instantly transported into the world of Konk, the second studio album by The Kooks.

In an interview with NME.com, Pritchard revealed that the band had "80 or 90" songs written and ready to record for Konk. "I want this album to be big," he said. "I've got an ego I want the album to do well. I want our singles to come on the radio and for people to literally have their heads blown off by them."

And rightly so. Just turned on the tube during the Obama inauguration to find "Shine On" in a Michelob commerical. And just as Obama moved to the political "center" to win the election, it seems The Kooks might have done the same moving a bit more to the "center" with hook laden tunes like "Always Where I Need to Be." Fans of their first album should enjoy it, while those who may have doubted the songwriting on their first album will most likely come aboard and be very impressed by this record.

Definitely check out the Kooks on Konk. Definitely not generock.
