Man Man - Rabbit Habits
Man Man is the new Captain Beefheart. I know that is a bold statement to make but this kind of music you have to be a little deranged. Oh, but isn't it just a pleasure to listen to? After the amazingly eclectic Six Demon Bag the folks at Anti caught wind of this Philly-based band and signed them up. The result is the awesome Rabbit Habits. Honus Honus and his band of misfits are up to no good again with some wacky songs but I think they might actually be more accessible on Rabbit Habits than on Six Demon Bag. They just have that wonderfully psychotic circus thing going on that puts a smile on your face. "Hurly / Burly" really showcases this feeling. Then the Tom Waits comparisons start getting drawn on "Big Trouble", with it's oompa oompa feel and Honus Honus' crazed vocals. You might also hear a bit of TV On The Radio in his voice. That wouldn't be far fetched. A little more grounded is the pop-centric "Doo-Right". But they get right back into the weird on the romping "Easy Eats Or Dirty Doctor Galapagos". This is just delicious!
The sound on Rabbit Habits just feels raw and clever. It is different. It is fun. I think Man Man needs to take over the universe. We'd probably have a much different outlook on things. As I said on my Six Demon Bag review, you may have to be slightly demented in order to enjoy Man Man but I'd still invite you into my home.
