It is hard to believe that Devotchka is Denver. In their most exciting release to date, A Mad Faithful Telling, they bring a style of Eastern European Bohemia folk rock. With instruments such as violins, tubas, and accordions they truely bring a whole new feeling to the indie pop scene. The first song of A Mad Faithful Telling is "Basso Profundo," a track the combines western sounding guitars and Eastern European folk rythms. Moving along through the album you reach a song called "The Clockwise Witness." This the third track is truely a gem, with a beautifully catchy beat and that never ending cinematic feel Devotchka tends to give off this will surely be a favorite for anyone who listens to this album. They continue along with the combinations of sounds through songs like "Head Honcho," "Strizzalo," and "Blessing in Disguies." Amidst the beautiful mixture of cultural sounds is most likely the best song of the set, "Transliterator." "Transliterato" is a beauty of song with violins and smashing guitars, only adding to the complexities of the song are the piano and accordion that bring a whole new level of intricacies to behold. Devotchka truely made a beauty of an album. It is something different, it has replay value, and it is truely enjoyable. I am confident that A Mad Faithful Telling will be deemed one of the best releases of 2008 by anyone who has taking the time to take it all in. One problem it takes time to truely appreciate what you are hearing.
