It must be something in the water in Chicago because we are on the verge of yet another decent instrumental (post rock for those people who like the term) rock album and band. Speak it not Aloud is the first full-length for this quartet and marks a new high for the band. It is also a new signing for the ultra-different My Pal God (who else could have brought Drums and Tuba into the success they enjoy today). Del Rey enjoys the company of engineer Jason Ward (Paul Newman) on this recording and they were the first to use the newly constructed Engine Studios in Chicago. The songs are more like an experience than anything else. There is a nice variety between the songs but more often than not the band manages to meld the songs together nicely. Speak It Not Aloud is a very cohesive piece of work by a blossoming band. Ignore the idea that they’re probably just another post rock band because it takes talent to fit into this genre and they do it quite nicely.
