Last year I passed on an EP for review from someone named Langhorne Slim. Mr. Wood did a great job on intriguing me to anticipate the new full length album from New York based Roots rocker. That's a fair description for Langhorne who manages to have each foot firmly planted on the rock/roots fence. There is enough rock 'n roll here for people who like that sort of thing and yet folk/country types who like things like the Violent Femmes or even Bright Eyes might find enough to sink their teeth into.
His self-titled album starts out quite ambitiously with a Decemberists like dirge called "Spinning Compass". It sets a nice pace in which Mr. Slim is easily able to stay with expectations. "Rebel Side Of Heaven" heads a little more into the soulful direction with the piano and organ as well as a different singing style. "Restless" has a lovely shuffle going on that keeps your foot tapping. Later on "The Tipping Point" provides a raucous, foot stomping good time. "Diamonds And Gold" is a nice, soulful ballad that shows a different side of Langhorne.
Langhorne Slim is a perfect fit for those that like some earthy rock and roll mixed with a good time. This album contains quality material and provides a pleasant listen, not promising too much, but still delivering.
