The Kills - Midnight Boom
The Kills are another one of those bands that I don't associated myself with but every album they've released I've totally enjoyed. Midnight Boom is no exception. It's like the album that I wished PJ Harvey recorded. The album opens up with a bit of slower track called "U.R.A. Fever" with both VV and Hotel sharing vocal duties. Most of the vocals on the rest of the album are taken care of by VV. The album picks up quickly with "Cheap And Cheerful". For those of you who know and love Peaches may find relative enjoyment in this track. It's definitely a dance song with some good upbeat rhythms pushing the energy level. Then the catchiest song of the batch ("Tape Song") hits:
"Tape ain't gonna fix it honey, it ain't gonna stick to you"
Hotel takes lead on "Getting Down" and sounds cool as hell. They reach for a single with the wonderful chorus of "Last Day Of Magic" ("A little tornado, a little hurrican-o"). This is one of the many highlights of Midnight Boom. Another one is "Black Balloon" where VV really shows off her vocal talents. And they leave you on a very high note with the mellow and clever "Goodnight Bad Morning", one of the Best Kills songs to date.
Midnight Boom really takes The Kills to the next level. It seems that they've managed to add another dimension to their music via samples and slightly more complex arrangements. This really is a surprise for me seeing that I wasn't really expecting much change. So if you were like me and didn't like PJ Harvey's White Chalk, Midnight Boom may fill the void that has been left.
