Lucy Bland, a fivesome hailing from Seattle, presents an intriguing blend of electronica, folk, and indie pop. Down to Sea Level, the group'sfirst full length release, reflects the notoriously gloomy and wet climate of their hometown. In fact, the calm songs would act as a perfect soundtrack for those quiet days spent watching the raindrops falling outside. The music centers around Cat Biells gentle vocals and the light electronic noises. To complete their minimalist sound, the band adds layers by including faint guitar, violin, and cello harmonies. Together these elements create tranquil and beautiful music that is dripping with melancholy.
No track on the album stands out as especially upbeat. For many bands, creating a record entirely composed of songs in which the volume level rarely reaches above a whisper would be unthinkable. Lucy Bland, however, has talent when it comes to crafting lazy, introspective music. Although their sound does not diverge from the folky electronica-lite they focus on, Down to Sea Level does not feel redundant. In fact, the entire album molds together perfectly to form a lush and relaxing listening experience.
