David Pajo is one of those musicians who is much more than what they appear on the outside. Sure, he gave us some heavy in Slint and Squirrel Bait but then with his latest Pajo project and Papa M he has been a little quieter. He hooked up with Billy Corgan in a long awaited project called Zwan to very mixed reviews. But now with Dead Child Mr. Pajo is jumping into the metal arena and doing a damn fine job of it. Michael McMahan (guitars), Todd Cook (bass) and Tony Bailey (drums) round out this powerhouse band.
The album starts off with the furiously fast "Chariot":
"Give me all you need, death defying speed
Now I'm on my way, trying to make a save"
This gives you a great taste of what to expect. I love the thick and brooding "Twitch of the Death Nerve" with the awesome chugging guitars. The brilliantly titled "Rattlesnake Chalice" solidifies this sound. While Dead Child borders on Stoner Rock they still manage to keep things heavy enough to satiate pure metal fans as well. It seems that everyone enjoys playing something heavier in their career and Dead Child just happens to be Pajo's outlet.
While the standard sound on Attack may get tiresome for some, I found this to be a good, non-thinking style of heavy music. Nothing earth shattering here, instead Pajo decides to keep Dead Child true to a metal formula.
