After all the hype, The Datsuns have made it to North America. Are the worth the wait? Only if you like kick ass rock and roll! This quartet from New Zealand is new to the rock scene though. They have been around in some form or another since 1995. In fact, back then 3 out of the four guys to go on to become the Datsuns were in a band called Trinket and were winning band wars all over their small island. After they changed their name and became even the Datsuns they became friends with the White Stripes by opening for them on their New Zealand tour. Jack and Meg talked them into leaving New Zealand and toured the US and the UK gaining a rabid following. At this point they still hadn’t recorded a full-length album–singles but no albums. The White Stripes got them in good with V2 and managed to come to an agreement. This album is the result and it is one of the strongest rock debuts since the Strokes. Their songs are menacing but catchy at the same time. The rock riffs are monstrous and the lyrics are amazingly raunchy. We’re talking about an AC/DC for the new millennium. The Datsuns aren’t to be missed and this album is one of the first must-haves of 2003. If they make it to your hometown, drop what you are doing and check them out. This is going to be an important band for rock music.
