I still can't believe that Jamie Lidell is white. If you haven't heard this man then you need to check out his third album, Jim. He's got more soul than most black people. And I mean that in the kindest possible way. He seems to be revisiting late 60s soul in a way that would make Stevie Wonder proud.
Jim is his new album and strangely enough he is still recording on the Electronic-centric Warp. The album opens up with the sunny "Another Day", reminiscent of Bill Withers. He gets a Commitments style vocal backing on the second song, "Wait For Me". The true soul brotha comes out on "All I Wanna Do", a nice gentle, heart-warming song that seems perfect in every way. "Little Bit Of Feel Good" feels like Jamie is just going through the motions. I don't feel the passion here. But he gets it back on "Figured Me Out", seemingly like a lost Jamiroquai song. "Hurricane" is a hoot. It's a party starter for sure. A lot of these songs are even better than the ones on Multiply but I did find that there were a couple one's that didn't quite do it.
This album is about as far removed from the typical Warp fare than you can get. Anyway, kudos to the label for taking a chance on Mr. Lidell. This is primarily good music.
