Dev's best move was leaving The Test Icicles to pursue this solo effort. Named after an old school comic he did, the music makes about as much sense as the band name. That's not a terrible thing considering his tools. Lyrically, Dev channels indie writers like Jenny Lewis and Bright Eyes (which is going to automatically cast the "emo" tag from the young audience). And I'll admit that I was ashamed to like it at first, but if it's good, then it's good. Dev is said to have written the lyrics for most of the album on a 8 hour flight. On that same note, many of Bright Eyes' band members appear on the production/instrumentation of the album. This really drives the sound in odd directions, ultimately creating individuality for Lightspeed Champion. Imagine if the singer from Bloc Party (Kele Okereke) sang songs by Bright Eyes' modern sound.
Not to be overrated, the majority of the album is quality. Solid and rich harmonies... and a ten minute song (Midnight Surprise) that may be the best damn ten minute song I've ever come across.
