This one is a hard one to figure. Smile is at once full of typical Boris majestic sludge, and yet it is their most melodic release. There is pop here and, amid the hooks, downright nasty noise.  Not matter how they have extended their sound, they have done so in style.

Given the recent adulation, it is probably no surprise that some of this is a bit more radio-friendly than earlier efforts, but obviously we are not talking sellout here. "You Were Holding an Umbrella" and "Flower Sun Rain" are more subdued tracks, but in an electronic and shoegazing fashion.

More like what you expect is "Buzz-In," or "Dead Destination," which feature droning, loud and fuzzy guitar washes sure to please. Most of the recorded is awash in distortion, but at a slower and less epic level than in the past. That is fine. Smile may find Boris inching around some accessible sounds, but their palette is still heavy and chewy. Boris have added to their depth, and added fat to the monster.

I know there are a lot of Boris fans on this site and I wanted to draw your attention to their new album due out in April. Note the free MP3 and the Youtube video over there on the left hand side. Enjoy! Smile is going to be a great album.
