I'd agree with big brekfest in that Tapes 'n Tapes's sophomore effort is a lot weaker than The Loon. The band devolves from fun, inspired use of electronics and tight production to sounding much like any other so-so indie band. It's unclear if they're trying too hard or not enough. The songs do have a few of the interesting elements they're know for, but they only occur a few times in a few songs rather than constantly throughout. I would have to say that this album doesn't make me too worried about Tapes 'n Tapes's future, however. Now that they know what works and what doesn't, I'd anticipate a more solid third album.

Tapes N Tapes came out swinging with their 2005 debut album The Loon, which was a big, loud stage div entry into a genre that seems to value the avant garde over traditional song craft. Its sad to see the band embrace the idyllic excesses of the set with their latest album Walk it Off.
The Loon wasnt a perfect album, and had more than its share of warts but even its worst moments were at least clever and dynamic in some way. The same cant be said here. The album seems to be an amplification of the bands worst traits.
The songs are listless, and the lyrics are pedestrian and inane. The hooks from The Loon are sadly absent and the raw and rootsy attack has been drowned in post production and studio effects. The clever and tight composition that set Tapes n Tapes above the pack of mediocre indie-rock bands has been traded for songs that cant seem to figure out where theyre headed.
The lone highlight is the final track The Dirty Dirty, which is a hard-stomping ankle-breaker, and should have been the bar for which all of songs should have been measured to. Its a shame it had to sit at the end of the album, though its explosiveness may be amplified by the dismal mediocrity of all of the preceding tracks.
At best, Walk It Off is a horrendously uninteresting follow up to an incredibly exciting debut. At its worst, its an annoying, unfocused mess that begs to be turned off. Its a sophomore slump that can be held up as the very definition of the term.
